Coming To America

Judita and her two children (Eva and George) arrived in New York in 1970. Judita had many experiences starting over in a new country, but she described immigrating to the U.S. as the hardest adjustment she faced. In order to practice medicine in New York, Judita (who was 46 years old when she arrived in the U.S.) had to go through a medical training program and pass seven, 3-day written and oral tests. She worked in the hospital 120 hours a week, including weekends and nights. During this time she fell in love with psychiatry and received her psychiatric board certification (in addition to pediatrics). She worked at her “beloved” Manhattan Psychiatric Center for 20 years until she retired in 1992. During this time, Judita and Zdenek’s children graduated from New York University and pursued careers in medicine.

After retiring Judita and Zdenek built their dream home on the blue waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
